Januvia, also known as Sitagliptin, is widely prescribed to treat Type 2 diabetes, controlling glucose levels in patients. Januvia and Janumet, a similar drug also manufactured by Merck & Co., have been linked to severe conditions such as pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
Januvia was FDA approved in 2006, and its close counterpart Janumet, a combination drug, was approved in 2007. Since then, the FDA has received a high volume of reports of acute pancreatitis in patients taking Januvia and Janumet. Other patients suffered from less troubling symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea and rapid heartbeat. Many people may mistake this pain as a minor side effect of the drug, never reporting it and simply dealing with it. However, the side effects are actually indicators of much more severe things going on under the surface, such as pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a severe disorder with grave conditions that can result in inflammation of the pancreas, internal bleeding of the pancreas or organ failure. The individual may suffer from chronic pain and illness, or even death.
Even more troubling is the evidence that points to the fact that the drugs are linked to pancreatic cancer in some patients.
In September of 2009, the FDA issued a warning against the drug and its possible side effects. Merck was aware of the dangers the drug posed. The drug manufacturer not only failed to take the drug off the market, but it also continued to market the drug to patients, not warning of the toll it could take.
